How much housing has each Illinois town permitted?
Housing units authorized by permit since 2010, measured against the municipality's own 2010 housing stock.
U.S. Census Building Permits Survey; 2010 Decennial Census
Permits show what a municipality approved, not every home added. They count new buildings only. Conversions, additions and basement apartments never show up, and some permit offices skip months that the Census fills in with its own estimate, so the real number of homes added can be higher. For how much housing actually exists, the 2010 and 2020 census counts are better — each municipality's panel compares the two. How far apart they get →
